Do you have?
- tingling in one or more fingers
- numbness or decreased sensation in the hand
- hand "goes to sleep"
- pain in the palm or fingers
- discomfort wakes you up at night
- weakness in affected hand muscles
- tendency to drop things
If you have one or more of these signs & symptoms, you may have carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition in the hand where the median nerve in being compressed abnormally.

1. Various non-surgical treatments may give some short term relief from mild carpal tunnel. 2. But, if you have significant carpal tunnel symptoms, long term relief will require carpal tunnel surgery to release the pressure on the nerve. This will restore the blood flow to the median nerve which provides sensation to the fingers.
3. If you should have carpal tunnel surgery, a short out-patient procedure may solve the problem.

1. What tests do I need to find out if I have carpal tunnel?
- an initial special assessment is done in the office.
- An EMG (electromyography) of the affected hand/arm.
- possibly x-rays.
2. How long will it take to see results?
Most patients experience results immediately after the surgery but the final results may take up to one year to attain
3. How long do I have to be off work?
For the best results & outcome from the surgery patients are advised to be off work for 6 weeks.
4. Can you write a note for me to be off work?
Yes, we usually write a note stating the patient needs to be off work for 6 weeks & specifically if any restrictions are needed.
